Wildfire Resources for Washington Residents

If you or someone you know has been affected by the recent wildfires in Washington State, help is available. This page brings together resources from state and federal agencies for people who need support right now.

Greater Health Now is here to help community members affected by the wildfires get connected to the support they need. Our Care Coordinators provide free, one-on-one help navigating resources including:

  • Housing and emergency assistance
  • Food and basic needs
  • Health coverage and medical care
  • Childcare
  • Employment support
  • Mental health and community services

Are You in a Covered Area?

Governor Ferguson’s emergency proclamation activated expanded assistance for residents in these seven counties: Chelan, Douglas, Ferry, Okanogan, Spokane, Stevens, and Yakima. Residents of the Yakama Nation, Colville Reservation, and Spokane Tribe of Indians are also covered.

Some programs on this page are available to all Washington residents. Please note which programs only apply to specific counties.

Know where fires are burning

Track active fires at the DNR Wildfire Portal. Download the Watch Duty app for real-time fire alerts. 

Check the air quality before going outside

Wildfire smoke can harm your lungs and heart, even if you feel fine. View the live air quality map at enviwa.ecology.wa.gov and read smoke forecasts at the Washington Smoke Blog.

Air Quality Index (AQI) quick guide:

  • Green (0–50): Safe for outdoor activity
  • Yellow (51–100): Sensitive groups should limit outdoor time
  • Orange (101–150): Reduce outdoor exposure if you have health conditions
  • Red (151–200): Everyone should limit outdoor activity
  • Purple (201–300): Stay indoors and filter your air
  • Dark Red (301 and above): Do not go outside; remain indoors with air filtration

Financial Assistance

Individual Assistance Program (Proclamation counties only)

Provides help with home repairs and temporary housing for homeowners who lost their homes. Expanded eligibility means income is no longer a barrier for uninsured homeowners.

Family Emergency Assistance Program (Proclamation counties only)

Cash assistance for basic needs. Eligibility has been expanded to include adults without children. Benefits can now be distributed monthly as needed.

FEMA Emergency Support

FEMA is actively supporting Washington’s wildfire response by staging emergency supplies, coordinating shelter and survivor services with the Red Cross, and helping plan hazardous materials cleanup.

Unemployment Benefits

If you lost your job because of the wildfires, the state has waived several standard requirements: no one-week waiting period before benefits begin, no job search requirements while displaced, and expedited processing for faster access to funds. Licensed professionals including security guards and real estate agents also have extended renewal periods.
